Communication and behavior tips

Communicating can become difficult for people with Alzheimer’s and other related dementias, because they have trouble remembering things that once came easy to them; they can become upset, anxious, or even angry.

Why it matters: Dementia affects language abilities, making it tough to often find words or speak. It’s important to know it’s the disease that is causing this change, not the person.

  • Reassure them calmly. Listen to their concerns.
  • Help them keep control in their life.
  • Respect their personal space.
  • Include quiet times throughout the day.
  • Keep familiar objects and photographs around.
  • Remind them who you are, but try to avoid saying, “don’t you remember?”
  • Keep the conversation going for as long as possible, unless it is causing them to become upset.
  • Divert their focus with a familiar book or music if words are unsuccessful.
